Landfull is a speculative lens through which we can examine our constructed value systems.

The value of an object is always in flux between appreciable, transient, and rubbish states. The objects we discard reveal more about our perceptions of value than those we choose to keep. Two practices of sorting and extraction are highlighted in the film which transform the objects from waste to want.

Concept

Pickers glean for provision while the archeologist isolates artifacts to study social behaviors of the past. The ambiguity of time distorts the perception of the artifacts presented and our current value systems become dubious as we continue down a path toward landfull.

Implication

Existing public spaces such as the Dead Horse Bay (aka Bottle Beach) exposed by rising tides are compelling storytelling opportunities of an impending future pervaded by waste. The world generously offers a smorgasbord of storytelling opportunities for societal critique and reflection.

Exhibit

The speculative film and collection of artifacts were chosen for exhibition as the top Speculative Design studio project. The exhibition, How Things Don’t Work: The Dreamspace of Victor Papanek, juxtaposed materials reflecting the life and creations of Papanek (1923-1998) with work from emerging designers from Vienna, London and New York City. Papanek is recognized one of the earliest advocates of socially and ecologically responsible design.
